Bride Feedback & Customer Service Experiences

Among many cultures, and no matter what they are referred to, giving keepsake gifts to guests is a tradition that dates back centuries.  It is believed that it started with European aristocrats, who gave favors to celebrate marriages, baptism-christenings and birthdays, which then further extended to a range of special occasions.  Although difficult to pinpoint their exact origin, the prevailing thought is that the giving of favors originated in the Mediterranean areas in the 17th century.

Spanning the globe, these thank you keepsake gifts are often referred to as:

  • Favors in the U.S., spelled Favours in the rest of the English speaking world, including Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
  • Bomboniere (bombonieres) - Italian; origin Italy.
  • Bonbonniere (bonbonnieres); French speaking countries originating in France including Quebec, Canada.
  • Boubouniere - Greek orgiving; Greece.

The tradition of giving wedding favors spans many additional cultures across the globe.  It is also a Russian, Japanese, Dutch, Indian, Middle Eastern and South American tradition.

Although not as common today, many still like to give favors complemented by five sugar coated almonds, often referred to as wedding favor confetti.  History says that the five almonds represent health, happiness, fertility, wealth, and longevity.  Well then, isn't giving bomboniere (or bonbonniere, or...) such a great gift?!

Today, giving gifts of thanks are a ‘must’ for most social and religious gatherings that reflect a host’s appreciation for sharing in their special event.  Favors are most commonly given out to guests at receiving tables upon arrival, or during desert or parting – and have rich meaning.  When and what you give your guests is as individual as you are.
