Giving wedding bomboniere is a worldwide tradition. Among many cultures, and no matter what they are referred to, giving keepsake gifts to guests is a tradition that dates back centuries. It is believed that it started with European aristocrats, who gave favors to celebrate marriages, baptism-christenings and birthdays, which then further extended to a range of special occasions. Although difficult to pinpoint their exact origin, the prevailing thought is that the giving of favors originated in the Mediterranean areas in the 17th century.
Bomboniere Keepsake Gifts Arount the World:
- Favors in the U.S., spelled Favours in Canada and the rest of the English speaking world (eg., the United Kingdom and Australia).
- Bomboniere (bombonieres) – Italian; origin Italy. Bombonieri is the proper plural.
- Bonbonniere (bonbonnieres); French speaking countries originating in France including Quebec, Canada.
- Boubouniere – Greek for giving; Greece.
The tradition of giving wedding favors spans many additional cultures across the globe. It is also a Russian, Japanese, Dutch, Indian, Middle Eastern and South American tradition. Giving keepsakes, it seems, is a universal tradition and they need not be expensive (although in some cultures it would be unthinkable to give something “cheap” to guests!).
What Makes Wedding Favors Bomboniere?
Although not as common today, many still like to give favors complemented by five sugar coated almonds, often referred to as wedding favor confetti. History says that the five almonds represent health, happiness, fertility, wealth, and longevity. Well then, isn’t giving bomboniere (or bonbonniere, or…) such a great gift?! Traditionalists might say that this finishing with confetti makes the keepsake gift a “bomboniere”…or what you may call the favors in your culture 🙂
